The New Coffee Trends Set to Dominate the Market in 2019
The Coffee Shop Innovation Expo is dedicated to keeping you up to date with the biggest trends in Coffee, so check out these trends set to dominate the market in the second half of 2019!
According to the National Coffee Association (NCA), the percentage of Americans drinking coffee every day has risen from 57% to 62% over the past year. Now that is quite an impressive increase!
So what has caused this surge to happen? The association believes it has something to do with the rise in interest with gourmet coffee varieties and the increase in past-day coffee drinking among younger consumers.
Another factor that has caused this increase was the media attention surrounding a study on coffee consumption published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine in August 2017. It was the largest ever study based on coffee and mortality which involved more than 520,000 people in 10 European countries. The results were quite dumbfounding, as it concluded that drinking more coffee could significantly improve a person’s life expectancy.
Here are a few trends set to take the coffee world by storm:
Butter
You may have heard the rumours about buttered coffee, but apparently downing a cup of coffee with a bit of butter and other medium-chain triglycerides like coconut oil can give consumers an energy boost with no caffeine crash, mental alertness that lasts for hours, and appetite suppression.
Young men are among the diet’s most devoted followers, so you can expect to see buttered coffee pop up on certain quick-serve menus in a coffee shop near you very soon!
Cold Brew
The cold-brew approach allows additional ingredients like spices to form the base of the coffee, which can produce a broad range of different and interesting flavors that are much more pronounced and delicate than you would normally get when pouring sweetened syrup into the finished product.
Cascara
The rest of the coffee fruit, aka the red, slightly sweet coffee cherries are cascaras, and they have become a massively popular superfood!
Normally, these cherries would be thrown in the bin, but now you can find cascara teas and flour which the health-conscious consumer just can’t get enough of. They supposedly contain more iron per gram than spinach, more fiber per gram than whole-grain flour, more antioxidants per gram than a pomegranate, and more protein per gram than kale. As a result of this knowledge, it should come as no surprise that cascara is gaining popularity from some of the world’s leading coffee chains, even Starbucks have launched a limited-time cascara latte this year!
